Prospective Volunteers
Thank you for your commitment to the Jefferson County Public School District! Our students benefit greatly from the support of volunteers who are committed to their success.

Effective July 1, 2012, the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) will charge $10 for each volunteer criminal records check. The Jefferson County Board of Education will pay this fee for district volunteers. In light of this newly imposed AOC fee, the following changes in the Volunteer Records Check process have been instituted:

1. JCPS volunteers will no longer be required to have an annual background check. If it is brought to the attention of the District that a volunteer has plead guilty to or is convicted of drug or sexual offenses or any felony offense, they will be required to submit to a criminal records check and their volunteer status may be terminated.

2. All JCPS Parent and community members whose School Volunteer Records Check was cleared prior to July 1, 2016, are required to submit a new background check.

3. Volunteers who submitted a School Volunteer Records Check after July 1, 2016, and were cleared will not need to re-submit a records check until July 1, 2021 unless there has been a qualifying incident similar to those listed above.

4. The Volunteer Records Check requirement does not apply to volunteers who provide assistance with single or sporadically scheduled school events and who are not responsible for supervising children at those events. For example, an individual who speaks to a class or organization on a one-time or sporadic basis and who does not supervise students would not be required to have a criminal records check.

If you have not completed a Volunteer Records Check form and you plan to volunteer on a regularly scheduled and/or continuing basis or if you will have supervisory responsibility for children at a school site or on a school-sponsored trip, please complete the Volunteer Records Check Form here aand return to your child's school, or you may enter your information directly into our secure system using this on-line form.

Board Policy KK: School Visitors and Volunteers
Kentucky Legislative House Bill 136 requires all volunteers in public education pass a criminal records check. Jefferson County Board of Education Policy KK was adopted to fill that legislative obligation.
Parents and others in the community are urged to visit the schools in order to participate in activities and gain a greater understanding of the operation of the schools and the school system. Visitors to schools shall adhere to procedures established by the superintendent.
The Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) shall encourage assistance from parents and other community resource persons as volunteers to enrich and reinforce the instructional program. Volunteers are defined as adults who assist teachers, administrators, or other staff in public school classrooms, schools, or school district programs and who do not receive compensation for their work.

The district shall conduct, at district expense, a state criminal records check on all volunteers who have contact with students on a regularly scheduled and/or continuing basis or who have supervisory responsibility for children at a school site or on school-sponsored trips. Persons convicted of or pleading guilty to drug offenses within the past seven years; sexual offenses; offenses against minors; deadly weapon offenses; violent, abusive, threatening, or harassment offenses; or any felony offense shall not be used as volunteers.

The superintendent/designee shall develop orientation materials to be provided to volunteers as well as procedures for the encouragement and use of volunteers in the district. The orientation materials shall include appropriate school policies and safety and emergency procedures.

Use of Tobacco Products Prohibited
The use of tobacco products is prohibited in any building owned or operated by the board. Smoking on school grounds is permitted only in outside areas so designated by the superintendent or principal, subject to the limits set by law.
